Happy Father’s Day! To celebrate, I thought I’d share a photo of my Dad with you all. As an original hipster, ‘Bill’ was one of the first “J1′ers” to travel to America as part of the first US/Ireland international exchange program. He also took a road trip across the States in an old Bewick (sleeping on the trunk each night), something I hope to replicate for my 30th next year in a vintage Shelby Mustang.
My friend Dan brought this blog to my attention, and I thought, with the day that’s in it, you all might like to see it too. I’ll let the blog explains itself…
‘Sorry hipsters, your dad was the original hipster and he was killing it back in the day.’

Stella McCartney returned to London Fashion Week this season and avoided the traditional catwalk to showcase her collection. Instead, VIP attendees were treated to an electric dance off. Orla Kiely also showcased her latest Autumn/Winter collection via the medium of dance. So the question now is, if three’s a trend, who’s going to be the other designer to choose dance over runway?
Creative agency PENCIL presents THE SCENIC ROUTE, a love story featuring the ultimate supercar, the Gullwing SLS AMG.
The concept of the film was born after creative siblings Jenny and Jack Dyson took the Gullwing for a spin and fell madly in love with the car. Rather than give it the usual petrolhead spin, complete with smoking tyre marks and skidding noises, the duo turn it into a character with a beating heart, a roving eye and an ability to bring the world to its bonnet without ever turning the ignition.
Directed by Nick Jones with cinematography by top car man Tim Green and sets illustrated by Emma Rios, the film features a cameo appearance by British star of the silver screen Emilia Fox, as well as other PENCIL friends and family. Jenny Dyson, Creative Director of PENCIL comments : “We wanted to surprise the viewer by having this incredible supercar not move at all. Instead, the GULLWING is at the heart of the story, playing cupid, watching as life unfolds throughout one day.”
THE SCENIC ROUTE builds on PENCIL’s successful ‘Fashion Highway Code’ Tweed Run series, another film project the brother/sister duo worked on together. Speaking about their latest endeavour, Creative Director Jack Dyson says: “Working with my sister again was hilarious – we take it in turns to be bossy but it averages out. It was incredible to share a concept like this, showing this special supercar in an unexpected way. Originality is key, and using mobile sets like this isn’t something we’ve seen used before.”
The siblings masterminded the creative together, using finger puppets in place of actors to block out early versions and humming the music. Jenny adds: “The choreography of stage scenery being brought to the car was the big hook. One of my favourite films is Ken Russell’s The Boyfriend. We certainly were inspired by his 1960s musical, which takes place entirely on a theatrical stage. The Scenic Route is lo-fi with a hi-octane supercar twist.”
Rob Halloway, PR Manager for Mercedes-Benz UK comments: “Most journalists want to drive our super sports cars as fast as possible, so the notion of keeping it parked and having its drivers’ world whizz by was intriguing. I think their idea has led to a fantastic film – it’s almost the antithesis to other supercar treatments. The result of their labours is full of character and fun – and for Emilia Fox, one of Britain’s top actresses, to get involved in the project was a real coup!”
Marc Newson has collaborated with Pentax to create a stylish new camera. Officially launched today in London, this new interchangeable lens camera comes with high-speed burst shooting, an extra-wide sensitivity range with a top sensitivity of ISO 25600 and full HD video recording. In addition, Newson’s design has also been applied to the new smc PENTAX-DA 40mm F2.8 XS unifocal interchangeable standard lens — the world’s thinnest interchangeable lens, to be launched in the market simultaneously with the PENTAX K-01 camera body.
This collaboration is a great celebration for Pentax, as Marc Newson’s artwork is displayed in many major museum collections around the world, including the MoMA in New York, London’s Design Museum and V&A, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Vitra Design Museum. Time magazine has also ranked him as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. But innovation is not a new concept to Pentax, after all they were the first to develop colour digital SLRs and front customizable compacts, as well as pioneering concept models created in collaboration with various designers and artists.
Speaking of his design inspiration, Marc says: “I wanted to create something that represented quality and expertise in photography. Some of my favourite photographic devices have been Pentax products. I wanted to return to the high quality roots of the brand and create something which was really unique and iconic.”
The K-01 is the perfect choice for anyone looking for their first easy-to-operate digital interchangeable lens camera or those photographers who demand a camera with originality and style. The K-01 makes a wonderful second camera for current PENTAX SLR users requiring a stylish back-up for their photographic system.
